  • Ball Valves

The disadvantage to these valves is that they are not serviceable, that is, they cannot be opened up to make repairs or clear clogs from the valve. The handles on ball valves tend to break rather easily, and they can also be somewhat difficult to turn, especially if installed in an awkward position.

  • BASE DEMAND:

A titration test used to determine proper amounts of base (pH increaser) to reach correct levels.  For example, to raise pH from 7.2 - 7.6, your water may need 2 cups of soda ash.

  • BASE:

Those chemicals of alkaline nature which will counteract the pH of an acid eventually neutralizing at 7.0. Common bases used around the pool would include Soda Ash, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Carbonate, and Sodium Sesquicarbonate.

  • BICARBONATE:

An intermediate form in the deprotonation of carbonic acid.

  • Biguanide Treatment

Biguanides have been reported to be easier to use, with less chemical level testing, and less adding of chemicals. The water doesn't smell of chlorine of course, and the reduced surface tension gives it a smoother feel. It doesn't degrade with sunlight, temperature, or changes in pH levels like chlorine. At recommended concentrations, biguanides won't irritate the skin or eyes and can't corrode pool equipment.

  • Biguanides to Chlorine
Allow your levels to drop down very close to zero. You may want to run your filter longer and add an algaecide (not baqua-cide) when levels begin to get low. This process may take several weeks.  A good time to switch may be in the spring, after a winter of not adding any baquacil or soft swim. I have heard reports of others who have said that they simply let their pool go very green, made sure the baquacil levels were zero and then shocked it with chlorine...a simpler approach to be sure.

  • BIGUANIDES:
The name for a certain class of sanitizers using the polymer PHMB, the only non-halogen sanitizer available for pool and spa use.  "Soft Swim" and "Baquacil" are manufacturers of this technology.

  • BLOWER:
Plumbed into the spa return line, air is injected to produce fun bubbles and a hydrotherapy effect in the spa.

  • Bond Beam Repair
On In-ground gunite pools, the coping is the capstone for the beam, and is used to finish the pools edge and bring it up flush with the pool deck. Pre-cast concrete coping with a bull-nose front edge has been the standard for many years. Modern designs are making use of bull-nose brick coping in many colors and textures. Flagstone is also a popular choice.

  • BOOSTER PUMP:
Secondary to the filter pump, a booster pump is used to power an automatic pool cleaner such as Polaris or Letro.
